Varin International Residential School celebrated Onam on the school’s premises amidst much fanfare involving staff and management of the school.
The celebrations started with setting up of an attractive floral decoration (pookalam) in the auditorium that was reminiscent of the agrarian past of Kerala, a South Indian state. Impressive designs and artistic creativity were the hallmarks of the Pookalam, which turned out to be attractive and mesmerizing and took everyone into a world of festivity and fun.
The festival of Onam is dedicated to the King Mahabali who sacrificed himself along with his kingdom in order to stand true to his words. The day was marked by the special assembly, they enacted the mythological story of King Mahabali, followed by a song and dance sequence in Malayalam to commemorate the day.
Children brightened the campus with their colourful ethnic wear in the traditional attire of Kerala. Children brought petals of different colour flowers and were engaged in making a colourful flower Rangoli – ‘Pookalam’. The flower Rangoli was a collaborative activity of all the staff members of the school. The huge colourful flower carpet adorned the portico of the school campus, symbolizing peace and serenity in the world, economic well-being and resource sharing, love and brotherhood, high ethics and morals, and human justice and conservation of nature.
